Having been fans of each other's work for many years, Karen Brown and Ron Ryan decided to join forces in 1999 – opening Brown+Ryan in the Soho area of New York City. B+R is a design studio working in both print and interactive media. We create web sites, logos and advertising for many well-known design and fashion related businesses.

How we like to work

The first step in our process is to focus. We help our clients to clearly define their needs, context in the marketplace, audience, and desired impact. We want design rigor, technical prowess and marketing context to be humming along together, creating complete solutions. This approach – one grounded in a sense of the realities of corporate requirements as much as in the need for design excellence – has helped us to create award-winning, and most importantly, effective visual solutions that include identity, branding and advertising, as well as e-commerce web sites, videos and interactive kiosks.

Who we work for

We work with people who value the power of visual communication. Our client list can attest to that, and includes the influential design emporium, Moss; cosmetics giant, Coty; design-savvy fabric manufacturer Maharam; and fashion-perennial Banana Republic. Close collaborations enable us to direct our clients in appropriate yet often unexpected directions.

Brown+Ryan has been the recipient of many awards including gold and silver ID Magazine Interactive Design Review awards for our work on the Maharam web site and the moss in-store kiosk.
Karen Brown left EMI/CAPITOL Music Group where she was VP of Creative Services to start Brown+Ryan. Karen's prior experience in marketing, public relations and creative services within large corporations brings a distinct advantage to B+R's capabilities and focus, as well as a first-hand understanding of boardroom culture.

Ron Ryan has 20 years experience in graphic design, having run a successful studio in New York City prior to teaming with Karen Brown. He attended Cranbrook Academy of Art and the School of Visual Arts. Ron is the recipient of many awards including 1999 and 2003 ID Magazine Interactive Design Review awards. He brings a distinct creative viewpoint and a strong understanding of new technologies to B+R.
